“You don’t hear much about the ‘big, beautiful door’ anymore. During Donald Trump’s first presidential campaign, when some Republicans were queasy about building a 1954-mile border wall, he liked to add a caveat. There would be a wall, but it would have a door — big, beautiful, and sometimes even ‘fat’ — for the people ‘coming in legally.’ That never happened in Trump’s first term. Running again in 2024, after the Biden-era backlash to millions of new asylum-seekers, Trump never mentioned the ‘door.'” (05/30/25)

“Cameras from a bygone era. Rusty typewriters. Vintage radios. Matchboxes once used to light contraband cigarettes. In an age of new technology and artificial intelligence, a visit to the New Delhi home of Aditya Vij is like stepping into a time machine. Every corner of his museum feels like a carefully constructed history chapter. The anthropologist is an avid collector of artifacts and has dedicated his life to antiquities. Over decades, he has doggedly collected thousands of items that span several centuries and documented their relevance and the impact they have had on society. Each collectable he has salvaged feels like a victory against time, Vij says, underscoring his belief that maybe one individual’s attempts can quietly resist their erasure from people’s memory.” (05/31/25)

“‘Elon Musk says he is ‘disappointed’ by the price tag of the domestic policy bill passed by Republicans in the House last week and heavily backed by President Trump,’ explains CBS News. The ‘price tag’ is indeed a whopper, if by price we mean what Donald Trump’s ballyhooed ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ (the One Big Beautiful Bill Act or BBB) added to the debt: an expected $3.3 trillion over ten years. … He expressed his ‘personal opinion’ as he was exiting the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The exit isn’t the big story. We knew from the beginning that Musk’s time at DOGE was not going to last forever. Which highlights the up-in-the-air aspect of DOGE’s mission and future.” (05/30/25)

“Taylor Swift has regained control over her entire body of work. In a lengthy note posted to her official website on Friday, Swift announced: ‘All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me.’ The pop star said she purchased her catalog of recordings — originally released through Big Machine Records — from their most recent owner, the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. She did not disclose the amount. In recent years, Swift has been rerecording and releasing her first six albums in an attempt to regain control of her music.” (05/30/25)

“In addition to the immigration issue, Trump was voted in to cut spending and get our fiscal house in order. I believe this is undisputed. So, why is he and his followers so eager to increase spending, increasing our federal debt beyond the current $36.2 trillion? After all, we are genuinely well into a fiscal crisis with over $1 trillion each year just going to pay the interest on that debt. Only a few elected officials have been sounding the alarm, while others go along like sheep. It’s so sad to watch in real time.” (05/30/25)

“For centuries, the traditional role of elite universities like Harvard has been to train the next generation of leaders in every field of endeavor, to hold before them an open door to power and influence. So why on Earth are we holding that door open to communist Chinese nationals? I had a good friend in high school, sharp as a tack, double legacy at Yale, graduated Harvard Law and by 30 she was at the State Department. The joke was, ‘Don’t piss off Becca, she can pick up the phone and have you killed.’ The point here is that, for better or worse, and it’s often the latter, graduates of top schools are meant to create a class of people who lead the country, who lead its industries and sciences, who stay at the Princeton Club in midtown, and wear their college ties.” (05/31/25)

“The Art Institute of Chicago’s director was detained in Germany last month after drunkenly stripping naked on a United Airlines flight — but will now return to his high-paying post following an internal investigation. James Rondeau is set to return to work on Monday after the humiliating April 18 incident forced him to take a voluntary leave from the nationally renowned museum — where he pulls in over $1 million a year. ‘I deeply regret this incident and the impact it has had on the museum and me and on my colleagues,’ Rondeau said in a statement to CBS News. ‘I have dedicated the past 27 years of my professional career to the Art Institute and I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue furthering its mission.’ Rondeau was flying from Chicago to Munich when he was taken into custody upon landing for reportedly disrobing mid-flight after consuming alcohol and prescription medication.” (05/31/25)
