“Pop-up” super PACs pour $637 million into 2026 midterm races

“Late-forming super PAC spending has surged in 2026. Twenty-two groups created in the final 10 weeks before Election Day have each spent at least $1 million on congressional races, totaling about $637 million, according to a CNBC analysis of FEC filings. That accounts for about one-sixth of independent expenditures in 2026 congressional races, CNBC found. Federal disclosure rules can leave voters in the dark about who is paying for the ads. Super PACs must rapidly report their spending, but donor disclosures can come weeks later — and, for the latest-forming groups, after Election Day.” (10/31/26)
