“Even the most eager defender of the state will have to admit that if it is distinguishable from a mafia, then the difference is not in the manifested behaviors, but in something that happens in the world of pure thought and imagination. That is to say that for anyone who, being in the physical world, did not share the spiritual belief in the validity of the gang’s power, there would still be no material difference. In the first place, some have no spiritual beliefs at all. How can they be made to submit to this? Many more do have spiritual beliefs, and typically their high officials, both clergy and laity, have given strength to the system of confusion and the spiritualization of what is a moment of physical violence.” (11/02/25)
