“Charter schools are public schools that operate with greater flexibility than traditional public schools, as they are exempt from many of the rules and regulations governing public schools. In theory, this autonomy should allow them to be more nimble and responsive to changing conditions. There is no better test of this than the COVID pandemic. So how did charter schools perform during and after the pandemic? New research from Adam Kho, Shelby Smith, and Ron Zimmer, using student data from both charter and traditional public schools in Tennessee, suggests that they performed quite well.” (09/17/25)
