“There’s a lot of talk now about failing institutions. Every time President Donald Trump pushes the boundaries of his power — this month alone, he commanded Texas to create more Republican congressional seats and staged a hostile takeover of D.C. — his critics ask: Will no one stand in his way? Where are the pillars of democracy when we need them? I’ve raised these questions myself, yet lately I’m coming around to another way of thinking. Maybe the most culpable institution in our national breakdown isn’t any branch of government or industry — but rather the American people. We’re the ones expressly charged with holding a rogue president accountable, and we’re failing spectacularly.” (08/14/25)
