“Donald Trump’s isolationist movement to put ‘America First’ springs from a deep contempt for multilateral institutions and alliances, and for any rule or organization that prevents the U.S. from doing whatever it wants in the world. But what constrained the U.S. through transparent rules constrained our adversaries much more, by creating international coalitions against their predatory ambitions. America has not been a perfect and consistent adherent to the rules it itself established. But Trump has declared war on them to advance his isolationism. This will cede America’s global status at a time when it is already under challenge — to the world’s detriment and its own.” (07/06/25)
