“Championing access to the ballot box has been a star feature of Republican efforts since the party’s founding before the Civil War. The GOP supported voting for black Americans, the women’s suffrage movement and the fight against discriminatory Jim Crow laws. Now, however, some Republicans demonize ‘get-out-the-vote’ groups as corrupt and malicious, best exemplified by sensationalist Dinesh D’Souza’s debunked ‘2000 Mules’ documentary which uses misleading claims to accuse Philadelphia-area nonprofits of rigging the 2020 presidential election. The reason mail-in ballots seemed so divisive in 2020 is because conservatives made them divisive.” (05/01/24)
