“French and Dutch financial authorities have raided the offices of Netflix as part of a long-running investigation into potential tax fraud and breaches to labour law. The US streaming giant’s offices in Paris and Amsterdam were searched on Tuesday morning by investigators including those from France’s central office against corruption and financial and tax crimes (OCLCIFF). They were accompanied by members of the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF), according to two people familiar with the situation. The searches were part of a preliminary investigation opened in November 2022 that was looking at potential ‘aggravated tax fraud laundering and infractions of labour law,’ according to one of the people.” (11/05/24)
“The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that students eligible for free or reduced price school meals cannot be charged processing fees beginning in 2027. School districts currently work with processing companies to offer cashless payment systems for families. But the companies can charge ‘processing fees’ for each transaction. By law, students who are eligible for reduced price meals cannot be charged more than 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch. The 30 percent staff cuts will completely eliminate the nonprofit’s advocacy and global programs divisions, according to an internal email sent by Mozilla Foundation Executive Director Nabiha Syed. TechCrunch reported on the news, and Mozilla confirmed the cuts in a statement to the publication. … The Mozilla Foundation is a nonprofit arm under the bigger Mozilla umbrella; Mozilla Corporation is the arm responsible for the Firefox browser.” (11/05/24)
“Greece is considering setting up a migrant detention facility on the island of Rhodes in the eastern Mediterranean to tackle a rise in arrivals from neighbouring Turkey, Migration Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos said on Tuesday. Hundreds of migrants have arrived on the islands of Rhodes and nearby Symi in recent months, local officials say. Images on local media has shown them setting up tents and sitting on cardboard boxes in Rhodes town centre, drawing criticism from local people. There is no migrant facility on Rhodes and the government is considering setting up a temporary detention centre, Panagiotopoulos told Greek public broadcaster ERT.” (11/05/24)
