“Gov. Gavin Newsom wasn’t playing nice late Friday when he fired back at President Donald Trump’s threats of taking away federal funding for California. CNN first reported that the Trump administration plans on pulling back large chunks of federal spending in California, which could include ‘a full termination’ of major grants for the University of California and California State University systems, sources told CNN. The outlet said the pullback could happen as early as Friday. Newsom bit back almost instantly, suggesting that if Trump were to withhold funding from the state, Newsom would consider cutting off the billions of taxpayer dollars that California sends to the federal government each year. ‘Californians pay the bills for the federal government. We pay over $80 BILLION more in taxes than we get back. Maybe it’s time to cut that off, @realDonaldTrump,’ Newsom posted to X Friday afternoon.” (06/06/25)
