“23andMe, the Bay Area company whose recent bankruptcy filing prompted concerns about its vast store of customers’ genetic data, has officially placed the specter of layoffs over its staff. The genetic testing company is in the throes of bankruptcy litigation and, per Bloomberg, is expecting multiple bids for the company’s DNA data bank and other assets. In a WARN document filed with California officials on May 1, as generally required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act in the event of mass layoffs, 23andMe wrote that it is remaining active through its sale process and that it ‘hopes’ someone will buy up the entire business, in which case it could keep everyone employed. But the company gave a few reasons why workers might fear layoffs instead.” (05/07/25)
