“Public lands enjoyed by millions around the country might look and feel different next year. The U.S. Forest Service recently announced plans to cut all hiring of non-firefighting seasonal workers in 2025, meaning thousands of trail and maintenance workers, scientists and other employees will no longer tend to the land and facilities managed by the agency. Forest Service Chief Randy Moore announced during a Sept. 17 all-employee call that the agency will not fill any of its roughly 2,400 seasonal positions due to ‘budgetary constraints.’ The hiring freeze doesn’t include a seasonal firefighting workforce of 11,300 people, Forest Service spokesperson Scott Owen told SFGATE in a statement. ‘We understand that this will have an impact that will reverberate across all national forests,’ Owen said. ‘That said, we are working closely with individual partners to explore creative solutions to fill gaps where we can.'” (10/23/24)
