CA: Man gets jail time for trying to get photo of Yellowstone geyser

“A man was sentenced to seven days in jail, banned from Yellowstone National Park for two years and ordered to pay a $1,500 fine after he trespassed into the Norris Geyser Basin and came within 15 to 20 feet of Steamboat Geyser, the tallest and ‘most dangerous’ active geyser in the world, park officials said Thursday. Authorities were dispatched to the basin after a park employee reported seeing a visitor wandering off the boardwalk. A photo taken by the employee showed the individual ‘had clearly crossed over the fence and was walking up the hillside,’ quickly approaching the steam vent in the park’s hottest basin, the news release said. When the geyser erupts, it sends water over 160 degrees Fahrenheit up to 300 feet in the air, a dazzling yet erratic spectacle capable of toppling pine trees with a roar so deafening that it’s awakened sleeping campers over a mile away.” (06/17/24)
