“William F. Buckley would have smiled at Hankins’[s] description of him as ‘the liberal gentleman.’ Buckley was, of course, the founding father of the modern American conservative movement—a movement whose mission, as he and his co-founders conceived it, was to oppose what had come to be known as “liberalism” in American politics. In the context of the intellectual boxing matches in which Buckley was a star pugilist, ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ were antonyms. How, then, does Buckley count, in Hankins’[s] reckoning, as a ‘liberal?’ The answer is that Buckley believed in what has come to be known as ‘liberal education.'” (10/30/26)
