The America of Yesterday

“The Fourth of July has long been an occasion for Americana: for backyard BBQs and small-town parades, for patriotic speeches and easy conviviality, for baseball games and hot dog eating contests. What first struck me about America’s national holiday as someone who grew up in Germany was how unselfconscious that love of country felt for Americans of virtually every walk of life; here was proof that it is possible to love thine own without denigrating the other, to engage in love of country without being seduced by hatred or jingoism. This Fourth of July feels rather different. The country is currently governed by a president who revels in the pomp and circumstance of American patriotism while evincing evident disdain for many of the civic traditions which stand at the heart of its historic creed.” (07/04/25)
