“A liberal lawyer has ousted South Korea’s troubled ruling party’s presidential candidate on Tuesday, ending months of political instability that began with a botched declaration of martial law. Lee Jae-myung will be sworn into office Wednesday after his conservative rival, Kim Moon-soo of the People Power Party, conceded the race. Congratulating Lee, the chair of his rival Democratic Party, Kim, 73, said he humbly accepted ‘the choice of the people.’ Exit polls by the the key U.S. ally’s major broadcasters had Lee defeating Kim by comfortable margins. A joint survey by broadcasters KBS, MBC and SBS, which has in previous elections mostly been in line with the final results, put Lee on 51.7% and Kim on 39.3%.” (06/03/25)
