“President Emmanuel Macron on Friday tapped Francois Bayrou, a veteran centrist politician and one of his top allies, as the new prime minister, a move that few expect would stabilize France’s roiling politics. Mr. Bayrou becomes the country’s fourth prime minister this year …. Mr. Macron did not need parliamentary approval to appoint Mr. Bayrou. But to survive, the new prime minister must avoid a no-confidence motion in the lower house, which could be supported by the left and the far right. That unusual pairing brought down the previous prime minister, Michel Barnier, last week.” (12/13/24)
