“Casey Goonan, a doctoral graduate and East Bay resident, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a federal arson charge stemming from a series of pro-Palestine protests in Berkeley and Oakland in June. Goonan, 34, admitted to a total of five arson attacks, including the June 1 firebombing of a University of California Police Department car with a bag of Molotov cocktail explosives. The attacks came after a tense spring on UC campuses, where students set up encampments to protest administrations’ links to Israel. ‘These acts were undertaken in response to the University of California’s and the Federal Government’s treatment of pro-Palestine protestors,’ Goonan’s lawyer, Jeff Wozniak, told SFGATE on Wednesday. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California announced the guilty plea in a Tuesday press release that included a list of Goonan’s admitted attacks.” (01/16/25)
