“Sheng Thao is the next mayor of Oakland, according to the final vote tally from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters. A self-described progressive, Thao has represented Oakland’s District 4 as a city councilmember since 2019. After incorporating ranked-choice voting tabulations, she earned a narrow 50.3% to 49.7% edge over fellow city Councilmember Loren Taylor, who represents District 6. ‘It’s been a long journey, and I’m incredibly honored by the trust the voters have placed in me,’ Thao wrote in a statement late Monday night. ‘This was a very close election and I am proud to be elected as Oakland’s next Mayor.’ The Oakland mayoral race came down to two competing voter blocs. Thao was able to garner support from progressives and leftists and earned the endorsements of the Alameda County Democratic Party, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., as well as three of her city council colleagues.” (11/22/22)
