Dog bites man: Dave Chappelle courts controversy in “SNL” monologue

Source: SFGate

“The audience roared and the brass band bellowed as Dave Chappelle took the stage for his contentious hosting gig on ‘Saturday Night Live’ over the weekend — his first appearance on the show since the 2020 presidential election and the spectacular fallout that ensued a year later when the stand-up comic delivered a barrage of homophobic and transphobic remarks in his Netflix special ‘The Closer.’ The backlash was swift, resulting in mass employee walkouts, as well as widespread condemnation of Chappelle and threats to cancel subscriptions to the Los Gatos-based streaming service. Throughout most of his opening monologue, though, Chappelle steered clear of his own controversy, instead taking jabs at Ye (better known as Kanye West), Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving and U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker before warning the studio audience that the Trump era isn’t over.” (11/13/22)
