Liberty Does Upset Patterns

“Nozick argues that ‘liberty upsets patterns’ — to realize the difference principle over time will require the state to constantly interfere with people’s choices about how to use their personal property. Rawls replies that this isn’t the case; rather, the state sets up a redistributive and regulatory system aimed at realizing the difference principle and then simply allows it run. But Eric Mack argues that this reply merely moves the problem up to the level of the system. He imagines that Rawls’s economic calculators at some point discover that the only way to maximize the lifetime income of the poorest is to impose a retroactive tax on the rich.” (07/19/21)
