More than a million Puerto Ricans still without power as Hurricane Fiona begins to bear down on the Dominican Republic

“More than 1.4 million people in Puerto Rico were blanketed in darkness Sunday as Hurricane Fiona brought an islandwide power outage and battered the territory with heavy rain, winds and life-threatening flooding, officials said. While severe weather continued to pummel Puerto Rico Sunday evening, Hurricane Fiona began to shift westward, heading toward the Dominican Republic. … So far, at least one death has already been reported in the heavily-damaged city of Basse-Terre, the capitol of the French territory of Guadeloupe, the vice president of the territory’s environmental agency said Sunday. … The hurricane made landfall on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico Sunday afternoon, bearing down on the island with severe winds of up to 75 miles per hour and bringing 6-24 inches of rain to some areas by the end of the day, according to the National Weather Service.” (09/19/22)
