“Governments have used violence against dissidents and dissent for as long as there have been governments and dissent. But they rarely admit it. That’s important to keep in mind as we try to figure out what really happened in Lafayette Square on June 1, 2020. That day, law enforcement officers in riot gear cleared protesters demonstrating after the death of George Floyd from the square in front of the White House, at times using tear gas and rubber bullets. The operation allowed President Donald Trump to pose for a photo op at nearby St. John’s Episcopal Church. A narrative has since emerged, particularly on the right, that the clearing wasn’t connected to the photo op, citing a report from the Interior Department’s inspector general. … a narrowly focused report has been interpreted to draw an extraordinarily broad conclusion …” (07/14/21)
