“Coddling” the Afterword Part 3: Increasing Persecution on Campus

“Ordinarily, FIRE receives fewer requests for help from professors and students during the summer because fewer students and professors face threats to their free speech when school is out of session. But in June 2020, FIRE received five times more requests for help than it would receive in a typical June, and the caseload stayed high for many months afterward. FIRE found that between 2015 and 2020, the annual number of incidents in which professors and other scholars were targeted for ideological reasons has increased from 28 to 120. Furthermore, the annual number of petitions against scholars has increased from five in 2015 to 84 in 2020. These disturbing trends are driven largely by undergraduates, who initiated half of the documented incidents since 2015, and almost two thirds of the incidents in 2020.” (10/07/21)
