“Americans used to think of Australia as something like the United Kingdom with warmer weather and better beaches. But in the era of COVID-19, it has turned into a cautionary tale of the limitless powers that governments can seize under the guise of protecting public health. You won’t see a lot of headlines about it, but about half of Australia’s 25 million people are suffering under a severe, ongoing COVID lockdown.
