Netherlands: Tornado Cash Developer Sentenced to 64 Months as Political Prisoner for Protecting People’s Privacy

“A Dutch court has sentenced Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev to five years and four months in prison for laundering $2.2 billion through the cryptocurrency mixing service. The case represents a pivotal moment for decentralized finance (defi) regulation and crypto privacy. … The judge highlighted that Tornado Cash was intended for criminal use, dismissing Pertsev’s defense that he had no control over the platform’s users. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Pertsev did not implement measures to prevent Tornado Cash from being exploited by criminals. Pertsev’s defense maintained that the open-source and automated nature of the smart contracts absolved him of responsibility for the platform’s misuse.” (05/14/24)
