“Maui has struggled with overtourism in recent years, but the Hawaiian island now faces issues from a lack of visitors. Maui representatives are calling on travelers to support the island’s recovery following the tragic wildfires in August, but passenger counts have drastically fallen. In response, airlines are suspending service to Maui’s Kahului Airport. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green announced last week that travel restrictions on parts of West Maui are lifting Oct. 8, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority encourages visitors to book trips to the Hawaiian island. ‘We are emphasizing that now is the time for people everywhere to show their support for Maui by booking trips, making restaurant reservations, and frequenting Maui’s retail stores and attractions that support workers and their families,’ the Hawaii Tourism Authority wrote in a statement.” (09/14/23)
